Mom’s best apple crisp recipe has carried me through many a cold Winter’s night. When you realize you just have to have a sweet, warm dessert that still has some semblance of healthiness to it, this apple crisp recipe will come to your rescue.
Though not a pie, specifically, for some reason, I think of it as more of a pie-like dessert than most cobblers. Don’t ask me why. It makes no sense. For some reason, I keep it there among all my other apple pie recipes.
Prep: 15 minutes
Bake: 45 minutes
- 3 cups flour
- 1 cup butter
- 1/2 t salt
- 1 T cold water
- 6 to 8 medium apples cored, peeled, and sliced
- 1 cup brown sugar
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Mix the flour and salt together in a bowl. Cut the butter into the flour mixture with a knife or fork, or mix at low speed in standing blender, until crumbly. Add water and mix until just moistened.
- Prepare the apples, then toss in a bowl with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves or allspice until all pieces are well-coated.
- Pour apple mixture into baking dish. Sprinkle flour and butter mixture over the apples.
- Place in oven on middle rack and bake for 45 minutes, or until flour and butter mixture is bubbling and turned a deep golden brown.
- Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes before serving, either with or without ice cream or whipped cream.
